Liquid Identity
Liquid Identity explores a more contemporary notion of personal authenticity, one where our identity is not bound to one fixed role but rather something that is in constant motion. The project is a direct response to the hype around the term 'authenticity'. Through the presence of social media and the metaverse blurring the lines between real and fake, tautologies such as ‘be authentic’, ‘keep it real’ or ‘stay true to yourself’ have become even more popular. Yet, where do we draw the line between what is true and what is fake?
Inspired by Polish sociologist and philosopher Zygmunt Bauman, Canadian-born American sociologist Erving Goffman, and American philosopher Judith Butler, Liquid Identity communicates this idea of our identity being infinite, constitutive of multiple masks that are as equally real and valid as the other. The project aims to challenge people’s beliefs and paradigms but also bring liberation to people who feel pressured by societal norms. It is an encouragement to keep exploring and expressing our continuous self-inventions.
