Throughout my time at AUB my sewing skills have drastically improved. In second year, I was introduced to tailoring when I made a morning coat and since then I’ve remained fascinated with centuries old tailoring practices.
My first project in third year was to create a replica military greatcoat for Salisbury Museum, I enjoyed studying the original and researching extensively into its history. Salisbury Museum also asked me to recreate the tear in the back of coat which was sustained by stray shrapnel and the consequent repairs done by the original owner which add so much history to the garment. I also made an early 18th century waistcoat and a regency waistcoat during this term which expanded my knowledge of tailoring techniques.
For my second term I made an 18th century suit for a production of La Casa Nova which I enjoyed making immensely as it expanded my skill set and it was so rewarding to see my costume on stage.
Plans after degree
In future I would really love to keep learning new techniques such as tailoring for women’s wear. Also, I’d like to do more dressing and costume assisting jobs as I have really enjoyed those roles when doing work experience.
