Over my three years studying costume, I have developed my construction skills to an industry level. I have learnt to interpret a design into a realised garment and the creative process that takes place from paper to production. I decided to focus on construction and working on theatre by making for two live productions in my final year.
In the first term I made a costume for Mrs Brisket in the AUB production of Wolves of Willoughby Chase. Despite the role being female, a male actor was cast. Therefore, I started by creating the female form with a padded bra and bustle, before realising the design, developing my construction techniques in 19th century womenswear.
In order to have a well-rounded skillset I decided to construct menswear for my final project. I made an 18th century inspired suit for Captain Hook in Peter Pan. This allowed me to advance my skills in tailoring while exploring my creativity in the fantastical setting of Neverland.
Plans after degree
After graduating, I hope to continue working in live theatre, both in the wardrobe department and making custom costumes for large scale performances.
