Don't pull on the curtains
Don’t pull on the curtains is a multimedia installation performance piece that investigates consumption, familiarity and materiality through absurdity and movements, inspired from an old collection of my grandparents' '70s and '80s home photos.
The tonal grading compliments the installation throughout unifying the piece. The creation of depth through warm light is intentional. Creating shadows in turn immerses the viewer, providing the sensation of being consumed by said fabric. This tonal hue is reflected further within the fabric – traditional fabric colouring is integrated subtly, referencing the trend shifts from the '60s through to the '80s. This provides a sense of familiarity for the viewer.
The materiality is specific, allowing the translation of language to seep through. The viewer is held within a time capsule shielded from the modernised world. The experience of exaggerated textures cause a relationship development between audience and the space alone. This is caused by the lack of natural lighting within the installation space, inflicting a sense of solitude. Natural light is vital to human life, leading to questions around the figure's authenticity, contrasting the initial depiction that this is someone's house. The costume is an investigation into my own thematic dialogue of my own experiences.
