The Endless Scroll

The Endless Scroll presents two acrylic paintings illustrating stereotypical social media imagery, appropriated from Instagram, either side of an old television looping a point-of-view perspective of an individual’s day.

My work represents the use of phones in everyday life and our modern-day social behaviours with them, with the video work conveying how the phone and the endless scrolling on social media (such as Instagram) has now become a vital part of our everyday routines, with these devices becoming something we cannot live without in our contemporary society. The old television brings in ideas of technological determinism, with the contrast between the iPhone shown in the video being played on this demonstrating how society’s behaviours adapt to the evolution of technology.

My paintings evoke ideas of echo chambers and how social media algorithms put users into these ‘filter bubbles’, providing content that they will enjoy and therefore hiding them from the reality of the world. The pink stripes evident in the paintings symbolise the phrase ‘rose-tinted glasses’, critiquing these echo chambers in social media and how they prevent users from seeing the current affairs and destruction happening in the world, leading users to perceive the world through these ‘rose-tinted glasses’.
