Materials Reaction: Making to Contrasts
With an investigative material-lead approach, Materials Reaction: Making to Contrasts consists of couture fashion pieces, based on key tactile and property phrases: “SOLID/MALLEABLE; STRETCH/WITHDRAW; SOFT IRIDESCENCE; CUSHIONED CHAOS; INTRICATE CONTORTION; OPEN/DENSE and VIVID NETS”.
Leaning into my innate desire to approach design through making first and with a CMF interest, this project has evolved from contrast-based Little Makes, taking imagery, construction and property inspiration from these developed groupings. With a strong emphasis on manipulation and knit varieties, I’ve aimed to push the boundaries of traditional knit associations and limitations by combining with other textile and innovative processes, like CAD embroidery and digital print, in a mixed media approach.
This project has been driven by discovery and experimentation for unusual effects, using as much dead stock and scrap material as possible, underpinned with research into bio-alternatives. With a wide creative interest, the collaborative photoshoots to document this work enabled me to put forward an interest I have for cross-disciplinary work and creative direction, enhanced by my research and influence from trend boards and the way in which materials are put together to create an atmosphere, story or simply to inspire innovation.
Plans after degree
I am planning a collaborative project with a BA (Hons) Fashion graduate and to build my portfolio. Then, I would like to pursue roles in trends, CMF or sustainable fashion. I am also interested in gaining experience and training in broader creative roles such as creative direction.
