BA (Hons) Design for Costume and Performance

Anna Malone

As a designer, I love exploring new concepts and using my creativity to bring an idea to life. Working with abstract themes interests me, which is why I lean more towards designing for dance productions.

I worked on Silence: The Sound of Me this year, an AUB Level 5 BA (Hons) Dance production that explored the dancer’s relationships towards noise in everyday life. I loved collaborating between different departments, and the ever-changing nature of the designs; however, for my other projects I wanted to try something different.

As a result, I took on the Paintings For Inspiration project. For this, I had to recreate famous portraits in photographs, inspired by the work of my tutor Will Hargreaves. I had to challenge myself to get out of my comfort zone, and bring my work into 3D.

Next was a speculative costume design project for the stage. I knew I wanted to do something poetry-based, as it’s one of my interests outside costume, so I explored a few different ideas before coming to The Epic of Gilgamesh. This presented an opportunity for me to develop my historical research and character analysis skills, as well as broaden my knowledge on early human civilisation.
