This Saturday marks the 60th birthday of the original Barbie Doll, released in 1959.

BA (Hons) Costume and Performance Design students have created a full-size, real life version of the original first box and outfit, with Barbie wearing the same black and white swimsuit, sporting her signature ponytail and standing in a replica box. The modern twist comes with her holding a smartphone, wearing the latest trainers and carrying a pro-vegan tote bag.

Speaking about the project, course leader Rebecca Pride said: “Barbie is such an inspiration to girls and is as relevant today as she was 60 years ago.

“She’s the most diverse fashion doll on the market and has had over 200 careers from astronaut to zoologist.”

The full-sized Barbie will be on display on Bournemouth Beach on Saturday 9 March 12.00-14.00, on the east side of the pier.
