Our Filmmaking and Production summer course is an intensive, hands-on two-week experience for 15–18-year-olds who are passionate about film and want to discover what it really takes to make a movie.

Age

All students must be aged between 15–18 years at the time of attending the course. 

Experience or qualifications required

There are no formal academic entry requirements or qualifications needed to study this course. We only ask that you come with a passion for creativity and plenty of enthusiasm to develop your knowledge and skills!

English language

This course will be taught in English. We don't require you hold an English language qualification; however, we recommend you have an intermediate level of English to benefit fully from your experience and be able to communicate with your tutors and fellow students.

About this course

During the two weeks, you'll explore the complete filmmaking journey, from idea conception, screenplays and storyboards, casting and rehearsal, film production, editing and sound, to screening.

You'll gain an understanding of the different roles within a film crew and the creative decisions that shape a production, while developing your own practical skills through workshops, production activities and hands-on filmmaking.

The programme is designed around collaboration, experimentation and making; giving you the chance to learn by doing and discover where your own creative strengths lie. An ideal course for those students considering future study options and careers in the creative field of filmmaking.

Based at Arts University Bournemouth (AUB), you'll learn in the creative environment of Bournemouth Film School, working collaboratively with other aspiring filmmakers to take an original short film from its first idea through to the finished screen.

You’ll explore the creative and technical sides of filmmaking, gain experience with professional equipment and production techniques, and discover the range of roles involved in bringing a film to life – from screenwriting and directing to cinematography, production design, editing, and sound production. This isn't just about learning in a classroom – you'll make real films!

AUB has an enviable supply of specialist filmmaking resources, studios and equipment, giving you the opportunity to explore filmmaking in a professional, university environment.

You’ll have access to specialist facilities, including AUB’s new motion capture studio, alongside traditional filmmaking studios and production resources designed to support creative experimentation and hands-on learning.

You’ll also experience the collaborative spirit that sits at the heart of AUB. During the summer, you'll have opportunities to work alongside students from other AUB Academy summer courses, including the Acting for Stage and Screen summer course students, creating a truly collaborative filmmaking experience where performers and filmmakers can develop work together.

Not only will you go through the fundamentals and the journey of creating films from scratch, but you’ll also have the chance to work with live actors on set and learn the art of directing. Plus, your completed films will be screened at the end of the programme for group critique and to add to your showreel. 

Working in small groups, you'll develop a screenplay, including a shooting script and a storyboard for a short fictional film. You’ll then also take part in pre-production tasks such as casting and production design, before beginning the live film shoot and post-production sessions.

The residential package includes full board catering, offering an engaging environment to learn, collaborate, and thrive in a multicultural and international setting. Prepare to build your filmmaking portfolio and gain skills that will set you apart in higher education and creative industries.

A full itinerary of extracurricular evening and weekend activities, including a weekend cultural excursion at no additional cost

This course aims to:

Develop your understanding of storytelling principles and strategies specific to the short fiction film 
Enhance your understanding of narrative techniques; how to communicate visually and respond creatively to a brief 
Enable you to produce a short fiction film and understand the process from storyboard through to finished screening 
Provide participants with the opportunity to explore distinct roles of a film crew, gaining an understanding of film crew responsibilities and skills 
Enhance your understanding of film technical processes and cinematic terminology (e.g. mise-en-scène, editing, sound, etc.) 
Enable you to explore industry standard film equipment, developing your confidence and understanding of cinematic equipment and best practice 
Encourage your reflective skills through the critique of your own and others’ work, as well as through the critical study of film 
Develop your practical experience and understanding of post-production techniques and processes, including sound editing.

Will I be assessed?

You'll be continually assessed in a variety of ways including practical tasks, observations, assignments, presentations, and portfolio work.  

Work produced during the course will be collated into a portfolio and/or digital journal for students to add to their portfolio or for future development.

Your course tutor(s) will offer guidance and support you with your creative applications, as well as feedback on your work and offer advice for your future creative studies.

All students with 100% course attendance will be issued with an official AUB Summer Course Certificate detailing course content and study hours.
