About this course

Ideal for those who've completed Creative Writing - An Introduction (Stage 1) or who already have a solid foundation in writing, this course focuses on developing the techniques that bridge the gap between the beginner and the more experienced writer.

You’ll work on your own writing projects, which may include short stories, life writing, novels of any genre, children’s fiction or plays.

The course offers structured support in developing character and characterisation, alongside deeper exploration of plot, pacing and narrative shape. You’ll examine how stories hold together, where tension is created or lost, and how to make informed editorial decisions – learning what must stay, what can be refined, and what can be removed to strengthen your work.

Through carefully selected example passages from a range of periods and genres, you’ll explore changing approaches to dialogue, voice and form, and learn how to bring settings to life with clarity, economy and impact.

To support momentum and progress, your tutor will suggest deadlines between sessions and provide constructive, realistic guidance. This includes advice on routes to publication, writing competitions and contacting agents, for those who wish to explore these next steps.

You’ll be encouraged to produce a minimum of 2,000 words per week within a clear and manageable framework. Throughout the course, creative impulse remains central: you’ll be supported in sustaining your imagination, developing confidence in your voice, and refining your work through thoughtful feedback and discussion.

With expert advice from your tutor, you’ll also examine how established writers achieve their effects, using this insight to inform and strengthen your own writing practice.

  • Further reading guidance
  • Advice on contacting literary agents
  • Information on competitions and publication opportunities
  • Editorial feedback (by agreement)

At the end of the course you'll:

  • Have an advanced understanding and knowledge to work on your own fiction writing, whether it's short stories, life writing, novels of any genre, children’s fiction or plays.

Students can request a certificate of attendance if 100% attendance has been achieved by the end of the course. To request a certificate, please email academy@aub.ac.uk with student name and course completed.

Will I be assessed?

No, there's no formal assessment. As the course progresses, your tutor will measure your overall performance and offer essential guidance and feedback so you know how you're getting on.
