Suitable for adults aged 18+.
Level
Intermediate or anyone with some experience who want to refresh or develop their skills further.
Experience or qualifications required
You should possess some creative writing knowledge or experience in order to benefit the most from this course. Ideally, you’ll have previously completed Creative Writing – an Introduction (Stage 1).

About this course
On this 10-week intermediate creative writing course, you’ll explore more specific, advanced writing techniques to aid your journey from a beginner to a more experienced writer. The skills covered will help you work on your own fiction writing, be it short stories, life writing, novels of any genre, children’s fiction or plays.
This course will provide you the opportunity to develop your characters and characterisation skills, exploring where and how to manage pace, plot, and story line. You'll analyse passages from different periods and genres to widen the conventions your own style, bringing your stories to life with economy and force.
Each week, you’ll be encouraged to actively work on your extracts, alongside receiving industry advice such as finding an agent and even getting published, as well as crucial and constructive feedback from your peers to develop your goals further.
Your tutor will suggest deadlines to keep you progressing between classes and you’ll be encouraged to write a minimum of 2000 words each week within a framework that makes sense.
- Developing your creative writing skills further with characterisation, plotting and other more advanced techniques across forms and genres
- How to read more widely and identify techniques to apply to your own writing style
- Advice on how to get your work out there – contacting agents and submitting to competitions, magazines, and publications
- Editorial feedback by agreement
At the end of the course you'll:
- Possess have an advanced understanding and knowledge to work on your own fiction writing, be it short stories, life writing, novels of any genre, children’s fiction or plays
- Understand publishing, how to go about contacting agents and enter competitions to further your writing career
- Possess improved writing skills
- Be able to effectively edit your own work and identify the key details and plot drivers that need to stay
- Have a thorough understanding of writing for different settings, as well as an appreciation of different texts
- Have increased confidence in your own skills and feel inspired
- Have boosted creativity and imagination
- Possess the foundations to continue creating beyond this course

No, there's no formal assessment. As the course progresses, your tutor will measure your overall performance and offer essential guidance and feedback so you know how you're getting on.
