Widening Participation

We support the principle that people from any background with the potential to benefit from higher education should have the opportunity to do so.

Year 12 Specialist Summer School 2020

Year 12 Specialist Summer School runs from 27 July 2020 – 07 August 2020 and aimed to encourage those students who can benefit most from what we have to offer, whatever their background.

Course Details

During the contemporary Year 12 Specialist Art School students will examine the methods, materials and thinking processes that artist use, as well as exploring some of the questions raised by contemporary art. Our range of activities and approaches will offer students the opportunity to explore their artistic interests and passions. Students will be supported in expanding their portfolio whilst honing artistic skills.

This short ten-day course is designed to give your students a taster of studying at higher education level. The sessions will allow students to develop the creative thinking, contemporary contextual understanding, specialist learning, team building, problem-solving and communication skills to prepare them to develop their artistic potential, and if appropriate continue onto study art at a higher level.

Artist-led activities will take place online on 27-31 July and 03-07 August 10.00 - 12.30 with (optional) independent study in the afternoons.

Students will need to commit to the whole ten-day duration enabling sufficient time to complete their projects.

While we understand this online programme cannot fully replace the face-to-face, on-campus experience, we intend our online offer to provide students with the opportunity to experience a collegiate-level, immersive and challenging curriculum.

Our online model will focus on small group activities which are designed to foster creativity and individuality and will culminate in potential work for undergraduate application portfolios. We will provide a supportive environment for independent practice whilst introducing your students to the study of contemporary art.

Our online course will include:

  • Live small-group online practical lessons with tutors
  • Access to VLE with course content
  • Information talks: Student Finance, Admissions, Applying to AUB, etc
  • A free materials pack, allowing all participants the opportunity to engage with all aspects of the course*
  • The list of speakers is to be announced
  • Certificate upon completion

* (available to those students who meet widening participation criteria)

Please ask your parent/guardian/carer to read the student guide and then complete the online application form on this page. Applications must be completed by Monday 06 July and places will be confirmed by Monday 13 July.

Once all applications have been received, we let students know whether they have a place or not via email or letter.

Places are limited to 20 students so please be aware that applying for Year 12 Specialist Art School does not guarantee anyone a place. Where possible, we try to allocate places for those students who demonstrate a creative passion in their application statement. We will also tell you if any of your students are on the reserve list and will contact you if a place becomes available.
