AUB International Poetry Prize

Terms and Conditions

Terms and Conditions

  1. The AUB International Poetry Prize 2023 (the "Poetry Prize") is organised by Arts University Bournemouth ("AUB").
  2. The Poetry Prize is open to those specified who are not excluded by these rules. There is no upper age limit.
  3. Anyone who holds a contract of employment with AUB, whether established or casual, at any point when the competition is open (21 February 2023 – 30 June 2023) is not eligible to enter, even if they are also a student of AUB. Their spouses/partners are similarly not eligible to enter; neither are any current Poetry Prize judges nor members of their close family.
  4. The deadline for entries is 23.59 (BST) / 22.59 (GMT) on Friday 30 June 2023. Entries received after this deadline will not be considered.
  5. Poems must be no more than 40 lines in length. Titles, blank lines and page numbers are not included in the line count.
  6. Entrants may submit up to 10 poems.
  7. All work submitted must be in response to the competition theme of CHANCE, but this can be interpreted in any way and written in any style or form.
  8. Poems must be the entrant's own original writing, and be unpublished. Any work found to be published in print, broadcast in either audio or video formats, or to have appeared on a website will be disqualified without refund of the entry fee.
  9. All work must be typed or word-processed, clearly legible and written in English. Entrants should not include any illustrations or artwork. Aside from these stipulations, presentation, such as font type and spacing, is at the entrant’s discretion.
  10. Translations into English of work written in other languages can be accepted, provided that the source text is the entrant's own original work and has not been published (in line with point 8, above) and judges will only assess the English poem in the form it is received; translations into English of work published (in line with point 9, above) elsewhere in other languages will not be accepted.
  11. Entrants will be required to pay online via the AUB store. They will receive a sales notification email which they must forward by email, along with the attached completed entry form and poems (each poem as a separate attachment), to poetryprize@aub.ac.uk. Submission via other means (e.g. in hard copy by post) will not be accepted.
  12. All entries will be made anonymous upon receipt. The judging panel will not be privy to entrants' names during the reading and judging processes. Names will be reattributed to entries only after the judging process has been completed. Entrants can use a pseudonym for published work, however, they must also provide their real name when completing the entry form.
  13. Entrants may withdraw entries from the Poetry Prize at any time up to the date results are announced by sending a notification by email specifying clearly which entries are to be withdrawn. Entry fees will not be refunded.
  14. Amendments cannot be made to entries after they have been submitted; poems cannot be altered, corrected or substituted. If entrants wish to correct errors in poems, they must withdraw their poem/s from the Poetry Prize as above and enter again with payment of entry fee. No correspondence or discussion about amendments will be entered into.
  15. AUB reserves the right to disqualify any entry if it has reasonable grounds to believe that the entrant has breached any of these rules, or made a false declaration on the entry form.
  16. AUB cannot accept any responsibility for any damage, loss, injury or disappointment suffered by any entrant entering the Poetry Prize.
  17. AUB will act in accordance with current UK data protection legislation in relation to the personal data of entrants. Any personal data collected will be retained securely by the University, and will be destroyed at the conclusion of the competition.
  18. The Poetry Prize and rules will be governed by English Law and any dispute will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
  19. AUB reserves the right to amend these rules where it is deemed necessary to do so or where circumstances are beyond AUB's control. Any changes to the rules will be posted on the AUB International Poetry Prize webpage.
  20. Submission of an entry will be deemed to imply unqualified acceptance of the Poetry Prize's rules. In the event of any dispute regarding these rules or any other matter relating to the Poetry Prize, the decision of AUB shall be final and no correspondence or discussion shall be entered into.

Longlisted poems will be published in a celebratory digital anthology edited by AUB and will appear on the AUB Poetry Prize website, and/or in other electronic formats. The copyright for each poem published remains with the author. All unsuccessful entries will be destroyed on completion of the competition.

  1. A judging panel of practising writers will select a longlist of entrants and, from that list, the Chair of Judges will select the winning and highly commended poems. The judges' decisions are final, and no correspondence about their decisions will be entered into. AUB reserves the right to change the panel of judges without notice. The judges reserve the right not to award the prizes, or to reduce the prize money, if, in their opinion, such action is justified for any reason.
  2. All longlisted poems will be published in a digital anthology and invited to attend a prize-giving event hosted online by AUB on National Poetry Day – 5 October 2023. The winners will be announced at this event.

  1. The cost of entry is £5 (sterling) for a single/first poem and £3 for subsequent poems up to a maximum of 10 poems.
  2. 50 free entries (one poem per person) are available to writers who might not otherwise be able to take part in the competition. To apply for one of these, please contact poetryprize@aub.ac.uk by 28 April 2023 to register your expression of interest. All free entries granted will be confirmed by 12 May 2023. AUB reserves the right not to grant reduced price entry, if, in their opinion, such action is justified for any reason.
  3. Payment must be made via the AUB Store.
  4. In any cases where payments have not cleared, entrants will be automatically disqualified from the Poetry Prize.
  5. If entrants are having issues with or are unable to complete the purchase of tickets, please contact ‘income@aub.ac.uk’ with the subject headline ‘International Poetry Prize Purchasing Issue’ explaining the issue and someone will investigate.
  6. Payment in any form other than debit/credit card is made at the entrant's own risk.

AUB International Poetry Prize will award prizes of: £500 to the Winner, £50 to first Runner-up and £50 to second Runner-up. 10 additional entries will be awarded Highly Commended. All longlisted poems will be published in a digital anthology and entrants invited to a celebratory event hosted online by AUB on National Poetry Day – 5 October 2023.
