Lee Thomas, a second year student on the Film Production course at The Arts University Bournemouth is flying high over the summer, working as a Camera Operator for PlanesTV, a UK-based Production Company that specialises in aviation.
This is the second summer that Lee has spent working with Planes TV, which has been running since 1989 and has amassed an archive of thousands of hours of high quality aviation video footage. Lee, who specialises in cinematography on his film course at the University, travels across the UK and Europe filming aviation events and promotional videos with the camera department, doing anything from fitting cameras in aircraft, recording interviews or filming a display.
The Film Production course at the Arts University provides practical experience of the many aspects of filmmaking through both live action drama productions and documentaries. The course produces graduates with a range of skills and a practical, realistic and commercial outlook in the film industry.
Lee, who has been interested in aviation from a very early age was awarded a pilot scholarship from the Royal Air Force during his teenage years. He commented “This job is fantastic! It’s a great experience to spend one week filming overseas in places such as Turkey, then come back to the UK to film in the back of an aeroplane. As a student, I feel fortunate to be travelling across the UK and Europe combining the things I love and gaining experience for my degree. After I graduate, my dream job is to become a professional aerial director of photography, working on feature films.”
