William Hernandez Abreu

William Hernandez Abreu has over 20 years of experience of working in performing arts; with a focus on dance, music and set design/making.  William is a music designer and technician at TheGallery, Arts University Bournemouth.  He is an active member of TheGallery Group and contributes to establish TheGallery as a leading university gallery with an international programme of exhibitions and events.

William graduated from the School of Ballet and Performance at Jose Maria Romero Escuela National de Show & Expectaculos, from Cuba.  He is trained in Ballet, Latin and Contemporary Dance.  William has performed in Cuba, USA, Spain, Norway, Poland and England. He has also trained professionally in Athletics and Tae-Kwon-Do, Centro Deportivo Nacional Kid Chocolate and studied a module in Architecture in Cuba College.

He started working with TheGallery, Arts University Bournemouth in April 2014 as a freelance music designer, where he produced music for TheGallery’s exhibition programme.  William later joined TheGallery Team as a Casual Technician in June 2015.  He started working full – time from October 2015 to August 2016, as a Technician Demonstrator for Prep for H.E, working within the areas of Fine Art and 3D Design.   In September 2016, William was employed as TheGallery’s Technician.

William is responsible for the co-ordination, production, exhibition design and the technical delivery of TheGallery’s annual programme of exhibitions and events, and the care of the AUB and Arts Council collections.    He is the lead Technician on TheGallery’s Touring Exhibitions Programme.

William advises and mentors students on curation, exhibition design and trains them on exhibition builds and installation techniques. He deliverers a number workshops as part of TheGallery’s Schools & Colleges Workshop/Outreach Programme.

Professional practice

2016 – Present: Gallery Technician, TheGallery, Arts University Bournemouth.

– TheGallery Technician, currently working as a practitioner within curation, exhibition design, construction and installation techniques.

– Working with BA (Hons) Dance and (Hons) Acting, AUB on the relationships between the visual arts and performance art.

– Mentors and trains students interested in curation and exhibition design.

2015 – 2016: Technician Demonstrator, Preparation for Higher Education, Arts University Bournemouth

Providing technical support to students, in understanding the use of software and specialist techniques as part of their learning and course work within the pathways of Fine Art and 3D.

2013 – 2017: Professional DJ and Dance Instructor – AUBSU/BA Courses/Summer Courses, Arts University Bournemouth.

William is a Professional DJ and Dance Instructor in Latin Dance. He has worked with AUBSU, Degree Courses and AUB Summer Course as a DJ, working with staff and students on a range of events. Events have included Graduation Balls, Fresher Balls, Student Course Events and AUB Summer School Networking Events.

In addition to this he has taught a number of dance classes for the University’s Salsa Dance Society. He has also carried out fashion modelling and acting for a number of the degree works as part of their course projects.


2017: Modelmaking – An introduction, Short Evening Course, Arts University Bournemouth. 

Covering the areas of Architectural Modelmaking, sculpting, mould-making, armature building, casting, prop making, set building, and 3D printing.

Research Specialism


2017: Suddenly Last Summer 2017, AUB Campus Galleries: Curated by Violet M. McClean – Exhibition Designed by David Lund and William Hernandez Abreu. 

Suddenly Last Summer 2017 is a curated selection of work from our 2017 graduating cohort, showcasing over 60 artists, designers and makers. This summer we celebrate the achievements of just over 1,300 students who have since embarked on their professional careers and further studies.  This is the biggest annual exhibition that TheGallery stages. 


2017: Music Design for the exhibition IN PRINT, 26 June – 16 August 2017 –  Curated by Preeti Sood and Andrew Stacey, M – Studio Gallery/Makers Space, Arts University Bournemouth.

William produced a sound piece for TheGallery that was re- commissioned for the IN PRINT exhibition showreel in June 2017.  The exhibition celebrated 30-years of printmaking at Arts University


2015:  FLOW – A Digital Response to the Jerwood Drawing Prize 2014

TheGallery invited Ilze Briede (Kavi) and William Hernandez Abreu to collaborate on a digital piece in response to the Jerwood Drawing Prize Exhibition, as part of TheGallery’s Pop-Up Exhibition Programme.  Digital media and music design came together to create an alternative response to the way we see drawing.

2014 – 2015:  Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival 2014 and 2015:  Formal Opening Weekends

William produced and choreographed the music for TheGallery’s, festival activity in Bournemouth for the opening weekends in 2014 and 2015. Creating beach inspired music as part of TheGallery’s Off – Site Programme at ARUBA (2014) and WestBeach (2015), Pier Approach.


2014: Sound & Music Mix – Karen Fuchs: Unscripted – Usain Bolt Photographic Series: TheGallery, AUB.

William produced a sound and music mix piece for photographer Karen Fuchs Unscripted exhibition in April 2014, for the Usain Bolt photography series. The piece was produced for Karen’s Usain Bolt Showreel.  Karen photographed Bolt extensively from 2004 to 2013.

Karen Fuchs is an award winning photographer and AUB Alumnus, who has been shooting internationally for over 20 years.
