Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (University of Southampton), BA (Hons) Photographic Art (UWCN), VTCT Theatrical and Media Make-up (Coleg Morgannwg)

Biography

Following the completion a BA (Hons) degree in Photographic Art at the University of Wales, College Newport, Sophie turned her attentions to further study in the field of Theatrical and Media Make-up.  Having achieved a one-year Diploma in Make-up, Sophie worked as a freelance make-up artist for five years, initially in theatre and on short films and later promotional and editorial work.   In 2009 Sophie joined AUB’s new course, FdA Make-up for Media and Performance, and was responsible for equipping the studio and facilitating the running of the course by supporting the academic staff.  Over the past five years the course has evolved into a BA (Hons) degree, increasing from 34 students to 150, and now encompassing three make-up studios and 11 associated staff.   Sophie’s main role involves supporting both the academic staff in the delivery of the curriculum – through studio-based classes and workshop sessions – and supporting the students in their learning and understanding of the topics covered by each unit, and in the realisation of their project work.  She is also heavily involved in the essential administrative work required to keep the course running smoothly and undertakes tasks such as ordering materials and equipment, electronic registers, post runs, rotas et al, in addition to co-ordinating the four separate Level 4 student kits through multiple suppliers.

Professional practice

Sophie is a Technician Demonstrator for BA (Hons) Make-up for Media and Performance and can support all year groups and levels.  More recently she has been focused on supporting the Level 4 year groups on four days out of five, and she facilitates the across-course Open Workshop sessions every week.  These sessions also include the practice of ‘Studio Assistant’, in which students take turns to participate in tasks associated with the role of Technician to help maintain functioning studios.   Since 2009 Sophie has taught a 10-week evening course through AUB’s Short Courses section, entitled ‘Introduction to Make-up for Film, TV and Theatre’.  This course has run regularly 2-3 times per year with extremely positive feedback and has worked as both an informative leisure course and as a basis for people considering make-up as a future path of study or career.   For two years, Sophie studied part-time for a qualification in teaching and was awarded her PGCE with Distinction from the University of Southampton in July 2013.
