Research Specialism

My current research is ongoing exploring and investigating the importance and the role of drawing and how this is translated through textile applications, in particular printed media and painting. My passion for the fundamentals of drawing and colour are explored through the drawing process with mixed media and 2 dimensional approaches, whilst exploring ideas through painting, line and mark developed further into a textile discipline. It is these principles that help to inform my teaching practice at AUB. Documenting what I see through the use of sketchbooks, annotations and photographic imagery I look at composition, drawn line, paint, collage and brush work alongside surface pattern and to convey the subject matter onto paper and canvas. My sketchbooks play an integral part of my creative process documenting a ‘place’ and elements associated with it. For example, capturing and interpreting the notion of line, texture and shape I am constantly inspired by the ever changing landscape and surrounding coastline within my chosen subject. Following on from my MA in Printed Textiles, shape and colour are also important elements depicted within my work, and I plan to extend and expand upon these concepts derived from paper and move into fabric, combining textile and print based processes to enhance the characteristics of my initial ideas. Recent exhibitions have included work represented in a travelling exhibition ‘Sketch Drawing Prize 2013’ and a mixed show ‘New Year, New Work’ at the Curwen Gallery in London in 2014, alongside a solo show also at the Curwen Gallery, London in July 2015. More recently my work has been exhibited in the ‘The Stitch in Line’ show at the Gallery, AUB, 2015 exploring the link between textiles, fashion, costume and art based practices as well as work represented in a various mixed shows at the Curwen Gallery, London in 2015 and 2016. This year I have had work represented locally at a mixed show at Canford School, Dorset in 2017, submitted recent sketchbooks for the Sketch 2017 Drawing prize and am currently working towards new pieces for mixed exhibitions both locally and nationally.
