Biography

Mark is Senior Lecturer in Directing on the BA (Hons) Film Production course at AUB. A passionate filmmaker, Mark draws from over 30 years experience as a Director to inspire a new generation of filmmakers. Trained initially as a Photographer, Mark’s desire for creativity and travel took him to Hong Kong where he lived and worked for 12 years. The invitation to work on a commercial for Chase Bank as DOP was the defining point when Mark fell in love with film, and from which he has never looked back. He joined Academy One Films (HK) as a Director in 1987, since when he has directed over 700 commercials and films for major clients, charities and government organisations all around the world. Campaigns Mark has worked on have received awards at the Clios, The 4As in Asia and The IVCA awards in London. Mark was awarded a Fellowship distinction of the Royal Photographic Society for his film work. Since undertaking his MA in Photography at AUB in 2013, Mark has been a Visiting lecturer on the BA (Hons) Digital Media Production, BA (Hons) Creative Events Management and BA (Hons) Film Production courses.

Professional practice

Mark’s professional practice focuses on directing TV Commercials and programme sponsorship idents. He also works as creative consultant to production companies and businesses across the UK, and mentors photographers submitting for distinctions with the Royal Photographic Society.

Research Specialism

Mark is currently Investigating methodology and research progression on how students receive, translate and apply film grammar for the expression of meaning in film given that, influenced by new technologies, they are informed by a different understanding of reality.
