BA Hons Fine Art (Goldsmiths College); MA Fine Art Media (Slade UCL); PhD Cultural Studies (Goldsmiths College). I am an artist and theorist working at the intersection of visual culture, science and technology. I am broadly interested in materiality and technology, particularly the politics of technical systems and how they frame our ‘humanness’. I have written recently on materialist photography; cinema and feminism (Ex_Machina); images of non-visible nebula constructed from datasets; and am completing a PhD at Goldsmiths (University of London) that explores love as a calculation of chance in the context of literary and digital systems. A chapter from this work is published in Algorithmic Life: Calculative Devices in the Age of Big Data (Routledge 2015). My drawings and films have featured in numerous shows and exhibitions, including the Bloomberg Space; Nordjyllands Kunstmuseum, Denmark; Temporary Autonomous Art; The Centre for Contemporary Art Glasgow.
I have devised and taught lecture programmes on BA Hons Photography and BA Hons Fine Art, delivering the theoretical and historical content and supervising student essays and studio projects.
What is an image? This deceptively simple question requires close attention in the context of postdigital culture where the dominant form of the image is photographic in the expanded sense. Today, images are increasingly considered to be ontological and ‘event’.
I am interested in the question of technology, most particularly in thinking through what technology is and how we define it in contingent and paradoxical ways. My PhD is a contribution to the field of comparative media studies that explores ideas of calculability and chance in pre and postdigital contexts.
