Jon was appointed University Secretary and Registrar in 2017, taking institutional responsibility for compliance with the HE operating and regulatory framework and academic quality, together with ensuring compliance with the requirements of external and statutory agencies. The post of Secretary encompasses the role of Clerk to the Governing Body and the Charitable Foundation.
Jon has worked at the Arts University Bournemouth since 2004, initially as Director of Academic Services and subsequently, following an internal restructuring, as the University Secretary / Director for Student Experience. Jon has a background in academic governance quality management, having worked at the universities of Brighton and East London, and joined AUB from the former Surrey Institute of Art and Design, University College (now part of University for the Creative Arts). He is a graduate of the University of Reading (at both undergraduate and postgraduate level), and is currently undertaking a DMA (Higher Education Management) by distance learning at the University of Bath.
Jon maintains a significant external profile, having been Chair of the GuildHE Quality Management Network since 2010; and from 2007-13 he was Chair of the national Quality Strategy Network, the membership organisation for senior quality professionals within UK higher education. He is a member of the UK-wide Standing Committee for Quality Assessment (https://ukscqa.org.uk/), and an alternate Director of the Office of the Independent Adjudicator (OIA). He also serves as an external member of the University of London International Academy’s Quality and Student Lifecycle (QASL) Committee.
As University Secretary / Director for Student Experience, Jon is the member of the University Management Team with responsibility for ensuring legal compliance, and regulatory alignment with the HE operating framework. He also leads the Student Experience Directorate, which includes those services which support the student academic experience, specifically those offered by Student Services, and Campus Services. It also includes the Quality and Standards team, who manage the processes which assure the academic standards of awards, and the quality of the student experience. The purpose of the Directorate is thus the establishment, development and maintenance of a distinct student experience for all AUB students, meeting the needs of specialist creative arts education and providing a learning environment which is supportive and safe, and enables each student to fulfil their potential. Jon’s background is in quality management, and during his time at the University, the institution has undergone two successful QAA audits (in 2005 and 2011), and in 2008 secured taught degree awarding powers.
