Study Skills Tutor – Student Services

BA in English Studies, MA in Applied Linguistics with TESOL, Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults (Cambridge)

Biography

I graduated in Applied Linguistics with TESOL in 2004, and since then I have been continuously developing my English language teaching skills in a variety of contexts. I started my HE teaching experience as a General English Tutor at Limkokwing University of Technology in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, followed by the roles of  the English as a Foreign Language Tutor in International House London and the Business English and 1-2-1 tutor in the Language Point College in Milan, Italy. There I also co-organized and delivered External Teacher Training for Middle and Secondary school teachers in Milan. In terms of teaching Academic English Language and Skills, I have gained significant experience as an English for Academic Purposes Lecturer at the English Language Teaching Centre of Sheffield University (2009-2015). There I also trained and practised as an IELTS Speaking and Writing Examiner. In years 2015-2017 I worked as an English for Academic Purposes (Reading and Writing) Lecturer at the University of Southampton. I joined Student Services team in 2018 where I have provided Academic Skills support to both home and international students. Overall, in the last ten years, along with a deeper understanding of Academic Literacy skills, I have enjoyed working with university students and supporting them in adjusting to a new academic culture.

Professional practice

As a Study Skills Tutor I provide one-to-one academic support to students whose English is first language and deliver academic skills workshops tailored to students’ needs, e.g. structuring academic essays, critical thinking and writing skills, reflective writing or time management. I also see students in Dyslexia QuickScan Follow-Up appointments. My long-existing interests are developing academic writing and referencing skills, new vocabulary acquisition and multilingualism, but more recently I have also become interested in Specific Learning Difficulties and their impact of learning.
