Emily Hawes is a Technical Demonstrator for BA & MA Fine Art, specialising in painting practice. She has been working to improve the resources available to students in the painting studios, known as Paintlab. Paintlab has been designed to encourage material curiosity & technical proficiency – in designated areas students can access a hotplate bench for making sizes, grounds & mediums, a canvas constructing & stretching table & there is a new pigment library, that also houses material samples made during workshops.
Emily Hawes graduated form The Slade School of Fine Art MFA in 2014 & completed a BA in Fine Art (Painting) at The University of Brighton 2012. Based between Bournemouth & Birmingham, she is a studio holder at Grand Union Studios in Birmingham, part of the active female network ‘GU Women’ & her work spans interdisciplinary practice, networked activities, video & sculpture.
Recent projects, exhibitions & commissions include: MK Arts for Health Sculpture Commission 2018, Art Licks Magazine Issue 23 2018, GU Women at Modern Clay 2018, Modern Clay Artist in Residence 2017-2018, Art Licks Magazine Issue 20 2017, ‘Liquid Assets’ Art Licks Weekend 2016, Interdisciplinary Residency Hospitalfield 2016 (ACE funded), Leverhulme Scholarship Wysing Arts Centre 2015, Melville Nettleship Award 2014. She has also worked as an Artist Educator at Gasworks (London) & Eastside Projects (Birmingham).
