Deano has over 10 years of experience in contributing to the development and delivery of widening participation and access. Responsible for the engagement of targeted schools at pre-16, he manages the progression framework enabling progression opportunities to higher education. Deano’s commitment to widening participation at AUB has strengthened external partnerships with local agencies (such as Children’s Services, Cultural Hub, Looked After Children’s Teams, Social Services, Virtual Schools and WAVE) allowing those that are most vulnerable with creative potential to access the arts.Deano completed his BTEC Foundation award in New Media in 1999. HE then studied BA (Hons) Film & Animation at AUB and undertook placements in Paris and London before graduating in 2002. From 2002-2004 was appointed as a sabbatical officer for the Arts University Students’ Union and was responsible for student representation on cross curricular and welfare affairs. He was also appointed as student governor for AUB in 2002 and championed new policy and reform for the students’ voice alongside the National Union of Students (NUS). In 2004, he was employed by AUB as an outreach project manager working with schools/colleges to enrich the creative curriculum. To develop his practice further in engaging those who are unfamiliar with higher education, he completed his Postgraduate Certificate in Development Management in 2009. Deano has now formalised his experience in project management by obtaining his PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner qualification in 2015.Now Senior Projects Officer for AUB, Deano manages a wide portfolio of activity to encourage potential students who have the ability to enter higher education, but who come from groups that are currently under-represented. This work ranges from primary school development through to coordinating the Short Courses 9-16 provision on a Saturday for young learners.
Deano facilitates all the pre-16 activity within the progression framework ranging from campus visits, subject masterclasses, taster days, portfolio days, Spring/Summer schools and much more for targeted learners. Deano also coordinates staff development sessions for local teachers to enrich and support the national curriculum. He also manages external partnerships and networks surrounding vulnerable groups and areas of coastal/rural isolation.
