Senior Counselling Officer – Student Services

CPCAB Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (BPC), CPCAB Advanced Certificate in Therapeutic Counselling (BPC), CPCAB Combined Certificate in Counselling Skills and Therapeutic Counselling (BPC), Dorset NHS Trust Counselling in Primary Care Certificate.


Andy trained in humanistic integrative counselling approach to become a fully qualified counsellor at Bournemouth & Poole College and he gained the experiential counselling hours required at an NHS GP Practice working with patients referred for counselling at the surgery. Once qualified, Andy was offered the position of full time Counselling Coordinator for the Bournemouth & Poole College Community Counselling Service at their Redlands Counselling Training Centre in Bournemouth. His role included assessing and placing potential counselling clients referred by local agencies and GP surgeries for final year counselling Diploma students to gain their experiential hours. He also coordinated supervision and vetted external agency placements for counselling students in order to meet the examination requirements of the CPCAB and the BACP Ethical Framework for good practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy.Andy also worked part time as volunteer counsellor for Age UK offering counselling and support for elderly clients in their homes.He took up his role as the Senior Counselling Officer at the Arts University in November 2005 and now manages a team of twelve qualified and experienced visiting counsellors, two trainee placement counsellors and the part time student counsellor.

Professional practice

In his role as Senior Counselling Officer, Andy assesses students who access or are referred to the Arts University Counselling Service and allocates them to counsellors on his team for regular weekly counselling sessions. He also manages his own case load of students for counselling and oversees the university crisis support service.

Andy also recruits and coordinates the visiting and placement counsellors for the service and hosts agency visits for external trainee counselling students arranged by their local counselling training schools. He also facilitates some of the Art of Study workshops and manages all the operational aspects of the Arts University Counselling Service.
