Andy trained in humanistic integrative theoretical counselling at Bournemouth & Poole College to become a fully qualified counsellor in 1999. He gained the experiential counselling hours required for qualification at a local NHS GP surgery working with patients referred for in house counselling by their GP.
Once qualified, Andy took up the position of full-time Counselling Coordinator for Bournemouth & Poole College Community Counselling Service at their Redlands training centre in Bournemouth. His role included assessing and allocating potential clients referred by local agencies and GP surgeries for final year counselling diploma students to gain their experiential hours. He also coordinated supervision groups for the trainee counsellors and vetted all external agency placements in order to meet the criterion of the Counselling & Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB) and the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP) Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions.
Andy also worked part-time as a volunteer counsellor for the charity Age UK offering counselling and support for elderly clients in their own homes. He took up his role as Senior Counselling Officer at the Arts University in November 2005 and now manages a team of eleven qualified and experienced visiting counsellors, two trainee placement counsellors and the part-time AUB student counsellor.
Andy is responsible for the coordination and delivery of a confidential counselling service to students, complying with the BACP Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions and the BACP UC (Universities and Colleges) guidelines for counselling in educational settings. Taking lead responsibility for the counselling service, he holds accredited status with the BACP and is responsible for maintaining the BACP Service Accreditation of the counselling service.
The AUB Counselling Service is dynamic and innovative, offering single session, solution-focused counselling on a session by session basis and all sessions are booked by students themselves.
Andy provides expert advice, support, and problem-solving to academic staff and wider University colleagues, contributing to the development of policies, procedures and good practice in relation to therapeutically supporting students and enhancing the AUB student experience. He also manages the work of staff within the counselling team including the line management of visiting counsellors, trainee placement counsellors and the part-time student counsellor, providing coaching and support as required and monitoring individual and team progress and performance. He is also responsible for coordinating and monitoring the work of external professional supervisors who provide private supervision for the counselling team.
Andy also works collaboratively with the Wellbeing Service and the AUB Student Union planning and delivering themed events and initiatives to benefit all students over the course of the academic year.
