Dean of the Graduate School and Research and Course Leader MA Graphic Design

Phil has over 25 years’ experience designing for major national and international clients. He has worked across many different design disciplines, from publishing to corporate design to branding and new media.
Before becoming Dean of Graduate School and Research 2019, Phil had lectured at the University full-time for 16 years, and previous to that was a visiting lecturer since the mid-1980s. He continues his engagement with teaching as Course Leader of MA Graphic Design.
A Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and the Royal Society of the Arts, Phil is an external examiner and has served as an external panel member at various validation events, course reviews and PhD Vivas. As a member of the Upper Leaders Team he sits on, or chairs, a number of committees within the University and has represented the University at external events.
Phil would welcome PhD applications related to design and cognition, conceptual, visual and multi-modal metaphor, communication design, and the value and meaning attributed to objects and things.
Phil has contributed to The Phaidon Archive of Graphic Design – a boxed edition of 500 A4 cards detailing some of the world’s most important examples of Graphic Design. He has contributed book chapters to The Open Book Project and Encountering Things.
He has published papers on typography and metaphoricity in such journals as: Visible Language, Design and Culture, and Book 2.0 and is on the Editorial Board of Message: Communication Arts Research.
Phil has reviewed book proposals for Routledge and titles for the Journal of Visual Communication. He has also presented papers at international conferences, such as ‘Beyond the Margins’ at Cambridge, ‘Cognitive Futures in the Humanities’ at Bangor University, and presented a keynote at ‘Paradox’ in Grenada.
Phil’s professional practice has ranged across: art editing a magazine produced for the British Airports Authority, designing an exhibition stand in the National Exhibition Centre for Glaxo Wellcome, and designing annual reports for Canon UK.
Phil continues his practice through engaging with TheGallery at AUB, designing catalogues, publicity materials and books, such as Lucienne Day: Living Design and Word Matter 3 which was circulated at the Venice Biennale.
