Dr. Kirsten Hardie’s professional output

‘Wow; the power of design objects in learning and teaching.’

Report – Published 12th Aug 15

This work was commissioned by the Higher Education Academy (HEA) and (published on HEA website) in relation to the HEA ‘Innovative Pedagogies’ showcase – evidence of innovative teaching by a number of HEA National Teaching Fellows.

This report considers one particular strand of Kirsten’s many pedagogic practices: it discusses key student-centred learning activities that she has developed using Object Based Learning (OBL) approaches. The reports presents consideration of three case studies that illustrate the distinct and different ways that objects can be used to facilitate deep learning: how objects can surprise, intrigue and engage learners. This report draws from and contributes to established work regarding OBL and offers pedagogic examples that can be adopted and adapted by others across and beyond discipline boundaries.
