‘Making Plans’ was a collaborative residency with Anne Edwardes at Bank Street Arts, Sheffield. The premise of the residency was to examine how we might interpret actions to create instructions in the process of making objects. Historically the documentation of craft processes would be presented in volumes that carefully articulated each stage of the production process. More recently amateur makers like ourselves are more likely to turn to internet sources such as YouTube in order to find immediate solutions to practical problems. This crowd-sourced, improvisational knowledge often incorporates discursive, contingent and unreliable testimony into acts of creation. We switch from one narrator to another, compare and revise solutions, move through different representational media to generate fixes and work-arounds to problems. This residency attempted to lay bare those processes, whilst remaining open to alternative potential outcomes.
