Amateur Making

Seminar – Published 21st Jun 10

Panel discussion with a public audience held in conjunction with the Jerwood Contemporary Makers exhibition at the Jerwood Space, London.

Amateur makers occupy a marginal yet essential position in the arts, yet the word ‘amateur’ often conjures up negative connotations. In this discussion, writers, educators, amateur and professional makers sought to define amateur practice, its contexts, benefits and boundaries. Speakers include: Stephen Knott, School of Applied Art, RCA; Katy Bevan, writer, curator, amateur knitter and Learning and Participation Manager at Crafts Council; Duncan Hooson, ceramicist and tutor at Morley College; Emma Shercliff, textile designer and maker, educator and researcher.
