Last week saw the opening of the Jerwood Drawing Prize 2016 exhibition, with a panel discussion and private view.

The panel was chaired by Richard Waring, Course Leader of BA (Hons) Fine Art at AUB.

Panel members included AUB’s Professor of Drawing, Professor Siân Bowen, Founder of the Jerwood Drawing Prize, Professor Anita Taylor, and artist Solveig Settemsdal, First Prize Winner of the Jerwood Drawing Prize 2016.

The panel discussed the ideas and work in the Jerwood Drawing Prize 2016 exhibition.

During the discussion, the panel debated what makes a good drawing; a question which is at the heart of the Jerwood Drawing Prize.

Anita Taylor outlined how a drawing needs to be fit for purpose, inventive in its theme, and have the power to captivate the viewer with what it conveys.

Solveig Settemsdal presented her winning artwork, which took the form of a video.

The largest and longest-running annual open exhibition for drawing in the UK, the Jerwood Drawing Prize exhibition showcases the work of UK-based drawing practitioners, from student to established, helping to define a wider understanding of the role of drawing in creative practice.
