Lucienne Day: Living Design, an exhibition curated by AUB’s Deputy Vice Chancellor Emma Hunt and Paula Day, opens today in its second location: Manchester School of Art’s Vertical Gallery.
The exhibition is part of Design Manchester 2017, the city’s fifth annual festival of design, with talks, exhibitions, workshops, films, fairs and parties.
First showcased in TheGallery at AUB, Lucienne Day: Living Design launched a year-long nationwide programme of exhibitions, events, award and collaboration for 2017 across leading cultural organisations, galleries and creative institutions in partnership with The Robin and Lucienne Day Foundation.
The Vertical Gallery is the second stop on the exhibition’s tour. On Wednesday 18th October, Paula Day, Dr Jennifer Harris and Professor Emma Hunt will discuss the life and work of Lucienne Day during a panel discussion.
The panel will be introduced by Penny Macbeth, Dean of Manchester School of Art and chaired by textile artist and Professor Alice Kettle. You can buy tickets for this here.
The exhibition tells the story of Lucienne Day’s design career, celebrating the life and work of one of most influential designers of the post-war generation, unfolding a sequence of photographs drawn from the archives of the Robin and Lucienne Day Foundation.
The exhibition also includes Lucienne’s prolific output of patterns for furnishing and dress fabrics, table linen, carpets, wallpapers and ceramics. Lucienne’s designs for curtains, dress fabrics and tea towels are also celebrated, demonstrating the continuing vitality of Lucienne’s design legacy.
The exhibition has drawn visitors from all over the UK, received national press coverage and engaged schools through numerous talks, workshops and visits.
Lucienne Day: Living Design was most recently showcased at The Museum of Carpet in Kidderminster, alongside its own unique archive collection of original hand painted carpet designs by Lucienne Day. The Carpet Museum is the only museum in the UK dedicated to carpets and carpet making.
