BA (Hons) Graphic Design graduates have been talking to AUB after their London Summer Shows. Here Will Broomfield discusses his work
Can you tell me about your show?
I have built a concept for a heart monitor for children and the way it works is there is a technology developed by MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and Microsoft that allows temporary tattoos to be converted into devices using nanotechnology, so essentially, I’ve made a mobile ECG (electrocardiogram) that children can design themselves before an operation or for at-home monitoring. It then links up to a smart device via NFC (Near Field Communication) or Bluetooth. Then from there that data can be sent off to their cardiologist, either manually or automatically. I won the Creative Conscience Award for this and was shortlisted or was highly commended for two other awards.
Can you tell me a little about your time at AUB?
I came to AUB into the Foundation scheme which was probably the best year of my life, I absolutely loved it. It was nice coming into a university with such a nice campus because I feel like it promotes sociability, something that has definitely developed me as a person and how confident I’ve become, due to the people that I’ve met and the inclusiveness that AUB promotes. After the Foundation I went straight into the Graphic Design BA. The tutors are so inspirational and so motivational and especially in the second year I really found my feet and blossomed. The in the third year I refined my skills. The course leaders are all so good. I have been round other universities where some of my friends go and they are good, but I don’t think any of them compare to AUB. You get the whole package with AUB, the links to London, it’s like a family where everyone knows each other and it’s very integrated.
What do you plan to do now you are finished?
I’ve had conversations with a health tech agency which would fit in with my heart monitor idea really well. I’ve also spoken to WRG and Future Brands, as well as a load of independent people as well.
