BA (Hons) Costume and Performance Design Keynote Lecture: The Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection

Deirdre Murphy, Senior Curator at the State Apartments at Kensington Palace visited AUB to present the Royal Dress Collection to BA (Hons) Costume and Performance Design students. Deirdre gave a presentation featuring images of Queen Victoria’s wedding dress and the Marchioness of Rockingham’s silver thread Mantua court dress.

In the lecture, Deirdre spoke about the way her team work with clothes and artefacts that belong to Royalty. She provided a wonderful insight into the collection at Kensington Palace, and spoke about the innovative ways that she curates the exhibitions at the Palace. Deirdre’s role includes collecting additions to the main collection and she explained how she purchases garments that complement items included in the Kensington Palace collection, including items that belonged to the late Princess of Wales.

AUB was recently awarded The Queen’s Anniversary Prize in recognition as a centre of excellence for costume design. Students and members of the course team will be attending a formal reception and presentation of prizes at Buckingham Palace on the 22nd February 2018.
