AUBSU marks Black History Month
Arts University Bournemouth’s Students’ Union (AUBSU) is marking Black History Month with a wide range of events
Organised by AUBSU’s Race Equalities Officer, Louise Hall, the programme started with a screening of Kirikou and the Sorceress, an animated film based on the folk tales of Senegal.
There has also been a collaborative workshop called Expanding our Horizons aimed at breaking down the views of those who took part through the medium of collage.

The collage workshop was called Expanding our Horizons
Speaking about the activities, Louise, who is a member of AUBSU’s Executive Committee, said: “I think it is so important to champion events which encourage and support an inclusive and diverse community at AUB.
“My aim was to create a set of events to make this the biggest Black History Month celebration that has been seen at AUB.
“I wanted to create events which not only celebrate culture but also educate.
“My favourite quote from Black History Month is from Audre Lorde who said ‘your silence will not protect you’.
“It’s speaks to me about not being silent when others are being oppressed or harassed.
“By being silent, it makes you complicit so you need to speak up for people who do not have a voice.”

The next event, on October 11, is a Cultural Appropriation Workshop that will explore the social constructs and ideas around cultural appropriation, providing a safe space to discuss the topic.
On October 17, a panel discussion titled How race is viewed in media will take place, involving resident artist Stella Kajombo-Lee and musician The Master of Inane Conversation.
There will be a club night called Magic at Bomo Bunker on October 18 and a second film night on October 25 showing the Oscar-winning Get Out.
