On Thursday afternoon over two hundred eager AUB students were seated in the Harbour Room at Bournemouth Life Centre to listen to a talk given by Michaël Dudok de Wit.
The award winning Dutch animator, director and illustrator gave a talk about his career as an independent animator and his most recent project, the animated feature The Red Turtle. The film was co-production between Wild Bunch and Studio Ghibli and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
Originally from the Netherlands, Michaël now lives in London where he directs and animates commercials for television and cinema. In 2000, his animated short, Father and Daughter won an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, the Grand Prix at Annecy, and Grand Prix at Animafest Zagreb.
Michaël explained how he received a call out of the blue from Studio Ghibli asking him to direct a feature film for them. He went on to share the amazing and complex journey of bringing The Red Turtle to the big screen. During the break, students had the opportunity to speak with Michael, who expressed what a pleasure it was to speak to such a large and attentive audience.
