Last week, the AUB community came together to honour exemplary members of staff at the AUBSU Thank You Awards.
The AUBSU Thank You Awards were presented by Students’ Union President, Beth Rubery, and Vice President, Ezra Evans. These annual awards allow students to recognise the hard work of staff.
“It’s really interesting to see how the staff experience here touches and makes a difference to students. When going through the applications it was emotional to see that people cared so much, and to read those sometimes personal, really positive stories and experiences. The Thank You Awards are about letting staff know that they are valued by students.”
AUBSU PLATINUM AWARDS WINNERS
Gemma Summerell, Technician Demonstrator, BA (Hons) Textiles
In her nomination, Gemma was praised by students for being “unstoppable”.
She said: “I’m flattered to have just been nominated and want to thank all my students for giving me recognition. It’s a pleasure to work alongside them and watch them develop over the years. This event was a great opportunity for staff to come together and celebrate all their efforts. Thank you to the organisers and well done to all staff nominated.”
Professor Paul Wenham-Clarke, Course Leader, MA Commercial Photography
Paul was praised for how he “pushes people to reach the stars”.
He said: “As a teacher, you put a lot in, more than what is delivered in the classroom. Normally students thank you at the end of their course at graduation, so it’s a special occasion to be recognised at this time of year.”
Julia Kotula, Study Skills Tutor, Student Services
Julia was nominated for her “inspiring and encouraging” attitude.
She said: “What a rewarding feeling to be appreciated right at the beginning of my AUB journey! I wish I could thank the student who nominated me. The ceremony, with a fantastic light-hearted speech was lovely, and the reception that followed a great treat.”
Ceri Miles, Technician Demonstrator, BA (Hons) Animation Production
Students described Ceri as “helpful and considerate”.
He said: “Being a technician means you really get to know the students on a personal level and you work hard with them to get it done.”
Preeti Sood, Technician Demonstrator, Printmaking
Preeti won a Platinum award for her “great teaching style”.
She said: “I’m truly honoured. It was an exciting and equally emotional moment for me. I was touched being called ‘the Guru who knows it all’. The appreciation I have received earning this award makes me feel proud working at the AUB and encourages me to do more for each and every student who comes through the Print room. I would personally like to thank AUBSU and all the students, and I would like to pass my congratulations to all the other winners.”
Amanda Stephenson, Senior Lecturer, BA (Hons) Make-up for Media and Performance
Amanda was recognised as “a lovely lady” who is “always helpful”.
She said: “Winning a Platinum Award was a lovely surprise, and when the student quote was read out I was brought to tears. The event itself was light-hearted, fun, and a wonderful opportunity to catch up with staff that I don’t often get to see.
It also made me proud to work for a university that actively invites students to reflect on the lecturers and technicians that have positively impacted them, and that is prepared to take the time to show those teaching staff that they are appreciated and valued.”
The following Group Awards were presented to the following teams at AUB:
- Arts Bar Team
- Library Staff Team
- Fine Art Technician Team
- Photography Technician Team
The Thank You awards were followed by the AUBRIETA Awards (AUB Recognition for Innovation and Excellence in Teaching Awards), designed to celebrate innovation and excellence in teaching at AUB.
