BA (Hons) Modelmaking graduates held their London Summer Show, New Blades, on 14th June. Graduate, Emily Rendle discusses her work, which focussed on the myths and misconceptions behind the Mandrake root.

Can you tell us a bit about your work?

“This model is a Mandrake root, a scientific version – so, if it was a real creature, what I think it would look like. I was watching ‘Behind the Magic of Harry Potter’ and it tells you about the history of Mandrake roots. It was basically a group of farmers who made up a lie that when you pull it out of the ground, the scream will kill you. So, it stopped people from stealing their crops and it also kept the price really high. This myth was created around it – it’s even in the Bible!

“I wanted to get that idea of what people believed it to be, a man in the ground, and think how would it develop if it was a creature.”

Some of Emily’s other work was based around plant lifecycles and how they grow.

How was your time at AUB?

“I’ve really enjoyed it. It’s such a nice campus and the people you meet there are so lovely. The workshop is amazing; the techs and the tutors are great. It’s such a good course – third year was great. I can’t think of anything bad!.”

What are the next steps?

Emily said that she would be chasing up opportunities from the Summer Show and interviews. She added that she was looking to go into freelance work where she could use all her modelmaking, creative and fine art skills.
