“That from a long way off look like flies”
An exciting opportunity has been arranged for final year students from BA (Hons) Photography at Arts University Bournemouth, as they exhibit at the Seventeen Gallery in London. The exhibition is intended to reveal their thought processes, working practices, influences and milieu; literally, their work-in-progress.
Thursday 24th January: Exhibition Opening 6pm
Friday 25th January: 11am – 6pm
Saturday 26th January: 11am – 6pm
The exhibition’s inspiration has come from Michel Foucault’s ‘The Order of Things’. A passage from Foucault quotes ‘a certain Chinese encyclopaedia’ in which it is written that ‘animals are divided into:
(a) belonging to the Emperor,
(d) suckling pigs,
(g) stray dogs,
(h) included in the present classification,
(k) drawn with a very fine camelhair brush,
(l) et cetera,
(m) having just broken the water pitcher,
(n) that from a long way off look like flies’
Students created their own specific lists that were intended to reveal how they think, what they prioritise, and the context in which they live – the stamp of their age and geography.
