Arts University Bournemouth is pleased to announce that Associate Professor, Dominic Shepherd and Course Leader, Richard Waring from BA (Hons) Fine Art will be delivering a paper in London next week.

The paper entitled ‘Heart; Head; Hand: Painting in a Post-digital World’ will be presented to the Royal Academy of Arts in London, as part of the ‘Teaching Painting: Painting the New Research Group’ conference, which runs from Tuesday, June 19 – Wednesday, June 20.

Both teach on the Fine Art courses at AUB and part of their paper will highlight the recent instigation of Paintlab within the Fine Art department, a dedicated painting studio.

Associate Professor, Dominic Shepherd said:

“Paintlab has been remarkably successful in reinvigorating painting practice at the Arts University Bournemouth. The conference will be an opportunity to share in the concepts behind Paintlab, its continuing growth and potential for the future.”

Course Leader, Richard Waring added that they were ‘thrilled’ to have been accepted onto the
conference and to be sharing the success of Paintlab. He said:

“This new studio space has directly increased the quality of painting, it is clearly evidenced in this year’s degree exhibition.

“Paintlab has specialist painting tutors and also has a new full-time painting technician who is
developing an important painting materials and processes workshop area. Its creation has also
allowed other course areas to flourish as specialist zones, including Sculpture and Media and

The conference will explore the critical, theoretical and political landscape in which painting continues to develop and will look at how the medium has remained resilient in a post-digital world – even seeing a re-emergence in popularity.

Vanessa Jackson will be the keynote speaker and in total 16 papers will be presented on the theme across the conference.

The conference is being co-convened by University of Brighton, Glasgow School of Art, Manchester School of Art, The Royal Academy Schools and the Royal Academy of Arts. Tickets are £98. You can find further information and register here.
