Two-time Academy Award-winning British costume designer Jenny Beavan OBE has said her Honorary Fellowship and MA from AUB are “rather marvellous”
Speaking at one of AUB’s three graduation ceremonies held in the Pavilion Theatre, Jenny showed her gratitude to the university as well as praising its staff.
She said: “I have to thank Arts University Bournemouth so much and I had absolutely no idea I was going to get an MA as well.
“I find it all quite odd as I didn’t get a single qualification from my years of education at all – I was too busy actually working for the various tutors who taught me to gain a degree although I did study at what was then ‘The Central School of Art and Design’.
“So, while many of my friends are now retiring, I seem to be revving up and getting back to being a student again. It’s great and I think it’s a marvellous idea.”
Talking about AUB, Jenny said: “I think a university like this is a great place to experiment because you won’t have the chance after that.
“And I would like to say though that I think this whole thing of learning never stops – when you leave Arts University Bournemouth, I feel you’ve all been taught very well.”
Jenny, who won Best Costume Design Oscars for A Room with a View and Mad Max: Fury Road, sounded a confident note for any graduates hoping to work in movies.
She said the film industry in England is “absolutely jam-packed”, adding “you can’t get studio space so there should be masses of work out there for people coming in”.
But to stand out from the crowd she said the most important thing for any graduate keen to impress, other than talent and a desire to work, was their people skills.
She also emphasised that in many creative industries, but especially costume design, success was built on groups rather than individuals.
Jenny said: “Remember you are always part of a team, unless you decide to be a fine artist.
“In my world, you may think you are a costume designer, and you will be doing costumes, but you are part of a bigger team and that’s one of the things I think is very important in all our film, theatre and television industries is that the whole thing is about teamwork.”
Jenny’s other film credits include Gosford Park, Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, The King’s Speech, Christopher Robin, Howard’s End and The Remains of the Day.
