Who Are You? …in a gender defined world — a competition which asked young people across India to debate the topic of gender through art — has been nominated for a Times Higher Education Award.
The campaign, devised by Arts University Bournemouth’s International development and Marketing teams, has been nominated for Outstanding International Strategy in the THE Leadership & Management Awards 2015. Other nominees in the category include University of Bath, Cardiff Metropolitan University, Harper Adams University, The Open University and Swansea University. The winner will be announced in a London ceremony on Thursday 18th June 2015.
The project took the form of a competition which asked school students across India to create artwork that addressed their personal identities in the context of gender attitudes within Indian society. Prizes included entries being featured on large billboards across the UK, a scholarship equal to the first year’s fees on any undergraduate course at the AUB and the chance to be featured in a high-profile exhibition at one of India’s most iconic art galleries – New Delhi’s India Habitat Centre.
On the competition itself, Robin Zadara, Senior International Officer, said: “What a privilege it was to work with so many talented young creatives from around India and to help give them this quite interesting platform for exploring and then airing their views.
It was really something to be part of a project that channelled all of that creativity and inspired so many people to interact with such an important debate. The Gender Defined World Exhibition in Delhi that topped it all off was a real achievement for the students and an experience that I’ll never forget.”
A shortlist chosen by a panel of leading Indian creative industry professionals formed an online gallery. The overall winners were then decided by a public online vote.
