When learning about building technology and materials, a trip to Portland provided an opportunity to understand this material first hand. Visiting St. George’s Church created using Portland stone saw first hand how the stone has been work, as well as how it ages. In addition, visiting the quarry and manufacturing area saw how the stone was cut and then machine calved. The most enjoyable part of the trip was actually calving the stone itself.
