Martyn Brewster’s abstract paintings and prints are strongly inspired by the English coastal landscape and the sea. Using a dynamic layering technique Brewster’s paintings capture a particular sensation of place.
He has studied at Hertfordshire and Brighton Colleges of Art, graduating with an MA in 1975. He has been a Visiting Lecturer at Winchester School of Art and Arts University Bournemouth.
Brewster has exhibited throughout the UK, France, Spain and the USA with exhibitions at the Royal West of England Academy, 2001 and the Study Gallery of Modern Art, Poole, 2003.
He has completed a residency in printmaking at Lowick House, Cumbria and received a British Council Award to exhibit in the USA and received an Arts Council England Development grant 1995.
His work is held in numerous public and private collections internationally including the Victoria & Albert Museum, British Museum, Russell–Cotes Art Gallery and Museum and at Arts University Bournemouth.
He has won numerous awards including the South West Arts Award 2004, Openshaw Printing award and received a Year of the Artist award from the Arts Council England. Martyn’s work was the subject of a major travelling retrospective exhibition launched at the Russell Cotes Gallery, Bournemouth.
