BA (Hons) Commercial Photography final year Adama Jalloh has won the British Journal of Photography Breakthrough awards.

She won the Undergraduate Single Image for her street portrait of a young boy in south London. Adama told us:

The portrait is part of an on going series called ‘You fit the description’ which looks at the disproportion of young black and Asian men being stopped and searched in London. I felt as though this issue in particular is constantly seen yet never really shown in the media or spoken about enough, I wanted to bring more attention to this because you rarely get to hear these young individuals openly voice their opinions and feelings on the matter. It feels great to have won the award, I think I’m still trying to process the fact that I have won – I’m just hoping what I’ve shot gives viewers more of an understanding about an issue that tends to go unnoticed.”

Congratulations to Adama – see her work in Sharp Cut at Candid Arts Trust, London 8th – 12th July.
