6 week Intensive Academic English Pre-Sessional Course
The 6 week Intensive Academic English Pre-Sessional course is studied on the AUB campus.
This course is designed to improve your level of English with a particular focus on developing the academic language you will need to be successful in your AUB studies.
This 6 week course is made up of 25 hours of lessons per week including:
- English language tuition and practice with emphasis on academic grammar and vocabulary
- One-to-one tutorials
- Academic communication
- British life and culture
Your English Language level will be assessed on your arrival to help inform course content. You will not have to take an IELTS test at the end of the Intensive Academic English Course, but you are required to complete the course with 95%+ attendance and show improvement in your English language ability through continual formative assessments before progressing onto the 5 week Academic English with Study Skills Pre-Sessional course.
Once you have successfully completed the 6 week Intensive Academic English Pre-Sessional course, you will then be eligible to progress onto the 5 week Academic English with Study Skills Pre-Sessional course at AUB. Please note that students choosing the 11 (6+5) week course must complete both the 6 week Intensive Academic English and 5 week Academic English with Study Skills courses successfully before they can progress onto their main course of study at AUB.
5 week Academic English with Study Skills Course
The 5 week Academic English with Study Skills course offers you the opportunity to develop your essential academic skills in a university environment, to help prepare you for your main course of study.
The course is delivered through a combination of the following:
- English for academic purposes sessions
- One-to-one tutorials
- Independent study sessions
- Library Sessions
- Guest tutors and lecturers
- Art based workshops, such as Life drawing and screenprinting
- Study visits
There is a strong focus on active learning and your ability to use new language, knowledge and skills accurately in your academic work. Throughout the course, a range of tasks and assignments are included to help you practice your skills and develop confidence in your use of English – both written and spoken.
The course provides a rich, stimulating learning environment; as well as working with your tutors in class and experiencing authentic academic lectures, you will also be working in pairs and small groups to share and discuss ideas and complete tasks together. Other aspects of the course encourage independent learning and effective time management.
By the end of the 5 week Academic English with Study Skills course, students must have reached the UKVI’s English language requirement for study at degree level and above. UKVI have set the required English level for study at degree level at or above CEFR B2 in each of the four components; reading, writing, listening and speaking. In order to determine your English language level at the end of the course, you will complete a number of summative assessments.
Each assessment must be passed before students are able to progress onto their chosen AUB course.

Whichever Pre-Sessional course/s you intend to complete, there is accommodation available for you in our halls of residence, located in the heart of Bournemouth Town Centre.
Accommodation contract dates are as follows:
For students completing the Extended Pre-Sessional course (6 week Intensive Academic English course and the 5 Week Academic English with Study Skills course) prior to their MA degree, contracts commence on 14 June – 29 August 2020 as standard.

Please select the appropriate option depending on your Pre-Sessional course choice:
‘Extended Pre-Sessional and Postgraduate’ (6 week Intensive Academic English and the 5 Week Academic English with Study Skills Pre-Sessional courses followed by MA degree)
When booking your accommodation you will need to book your Pre-Sessional and full time degree accommodation separately as two bookings.

Other Accommodation in Bournemouth
You may wish to arrange your own accommodation for the duration of your Pre-Sessional studies.
There are plenty of different accommodation options available to you throughout Bournemouth and Poole, including hotels and guesthouses, holiday rentals, private rented accommodation and short-term International student flats and rooms, to name a few.
Bournemouth and Poole cover quite a large area, so whatever accommodation you choose, make sure it has good transport links so you can easily travel to your Pre-Sessional classes.

After your course
There will be just over 2 weeks to travel or relax before the start of your main course at the AUB.
You will be invited to attend our MA Orientation Programme starting on Thursday 24 September 2020, which is a fantastic opportunity for all new International and EU students studying at MA level to meet, make new friends and learn more about the University; life as a student; studying at Masters level; and living in the UK. The programme includes workshops, talks and an evening reception with refreshments. There is also a day trip of the local area. More details about the programme will be available in May on your MyApplication portal.
All Masters students who attend one of our Pre-Sessional courses will also be invited to attend the BA Orientation Welcome Party further details of this event will be made available to you closer the time.
