Course Content and Structure
The 5 week Academic English with Study Skills course is studied at AUB and offers you the opportunity to develop your essential academic skills in a university environment, to help prepare you for your main course of study.
The course is delivered through a combination of the following:
- English for academic purposes sessions
- One-to-One tutorials
- Independent study sessions
- Library sessions
- Guest tutors and lecturers
- Art based workshops, such as life drawing and screenprinting
- Study visits
There is a strong focus on active learning and your ability to use new language, knowledge and skills accurately in your academic work. Throughout the course, a range of tasks and assignments are included to help you practise your skills and develop confidence in your use of English – both written and spoken.
The course provides a rich, stimulating learning environment; as well as working with your tutors in class and experiencing authentic academic lectures, you will also be working in pairs and small groups to share and discuss ideas and complete tasks together. Other aspects of the course encourage independent learning and effective time management.
At the end of the 5 week Academic English with Study Skills Pre-Sessional course, students must have reached the UKVI’s English language requirement for study at degree level and above. UKVI have set the required English level for study at degree level at or above CEFR B2 in each of the four components; reading, writing, listening and speaking. To determine your English language level at the end of the course, there are five assessments:
- Extended Essay
- Group Presentations
- Lecture notes
- Critical reading
Each assessment must be passed before students are able to progress onto their chosen AUB course.
