Entry into year 1 – Overall IELTS score of 5.0 with a minimum of 4.5 in each of the four components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening)

6 week Intensive Academic English Pre-Sessional Course
The 6 week Intensive Academic English Pre-Sessional course is studied on the AUB campus.
This course is designed to improve your level of English with a particular focus on developing the academic language you will need to be successful in your AUB studies.
This 6 week course is made up of 25 hours of lessons per week including:
- English language tuition and practice with an emphasis on academic grammar and vocabulary
- One-to-one tutorials
- Independent study sessions
- British life and culture
Your English Language level will be assessed on your arrival. You will not have to take an IELTS test at the end of the 6 week Intensive Academic English Pre-Sessional Course, but you are required to complete the course successfully with good attendance, pass the continual assessments and show improvement in your English language ability.
Once you have successfully completed the 6 week Intensive Academic English Pre-Sessional course, you will then be eligible to progress onto the 5 week Academic English with Study Skills Pre-Sessional course. Please note that students choosing the 11 (6+5) week Pre-Sessional course must complete both the 6 week Intensive Academic English and 5 week Academic English with Study Skills courses successfully before they can progress onto their main course of study at AUB.
5 week Academic English with Study Skills Course
The 5 week Academic English with Study Skills Pre-Sessional course offers you the opportunity to develop your essential academic skills in a university environment, to help prepare you for your main course of study.
The course is delivered through a combination of the following:
- English for academic purposes sessions
- One-to-one tutorials
- Independent study sessions
- Library sessions
- Guest tutors and lecturers
- Art based workshops, such as life drawing and screen printing
- Study visits
There is a strong focus on active learning and your ability to use new language, knowledge and skills accurately in your academic work. Throughout the course, a range of tasks and assignments are included to help you practise your skills and develop confidence in your use of English – both written and spoken.
The course provides a rich, stimulating learning environment; as well as working with your tutors in class and experiencing authentic academic lectures, you will also be working in pairs and small groups to share and discuss ideas and complete tasks together. Other aspects of the course encourage independent learning and effective time management.
At the end of the 5 week Academic English with Study Skills course, students must have reached the UKVI’s English language requirement for study at degree level and above. UKVI have set the required English level for study at degree level at or above CEFR B2 in each of the four components; reading, writing, listening and speaking. To determine your English language level at the end of the course, there are five assessed assignments:
- Extended Essay
- Group Presentation
- Lecture Notes
- Critical Reading
- Group Presentation
Each assessment must be passed before students are able to progress onto their chosen AUB course.
Halls of Residence
Whichever Pre-Sessional course/s you intend to complete, there is accommodation available for you in our Halls of Residence, located in the heart of Bournemouth Town Centre.
BA Students can apply for a room at Madeira Road Halls.
Accommodation contract dates are as follows:
For students completing the Extended Pre-Sessional course (6 week Intensive Academic English course and the 5 Week Academic English with Study Skills course) prior to their BA or MA degree, contracts commence on 16.06.19 as standard.

Please note that should you choose to book accommodation for your BA degree only, and then decide later you would like to book accommodation for any of the Pre-Sessional course/s, please email Student Services on firstname.lastname@example.org to request this.
We cannot guarantee that rooms will be available within AUB Halls of Residences, however, we will make every effort to ensure that suitable accommodation can be found for your consideration.
Other Accommodation in Bournemouth
You may wish to arrange your own accommodation for the duration of your Pre-Sessional studies.
There are plenty of different accommodation options available to you throughout Bournemouth and Poole, including hotels and guesthouses, holiday rentals, private rented accommodation and short-term International student flats and rooms, to name a few.
Bournemouth and Poole covers quite a large area, so whatever accommodation you choose, make sure it has good transport links so you can easily travel to your Pre-Sessional classes.

After the course
There will be a one week break to travel or relax before the start of your main course at the AUB.
The first week of your main course will be our BA Orientation Programme, starting on Monday 9th September, which is a fantastic opportunity for all new International and EU students studying at BA level to meet, make new friends and learn more about the University; life as a student; studying a creative course; and living in the UK. The programme includes a Welcome Party and day-trip, as well as workshops, talks and group activities. More details about the programme will be available in May on your ‘MyApplication’ portal.
The Orientation Programme is compulsory for all Tier 4 visa students.
