Dress code, robes and photography

Is there a dress code?

Graduation is a formal celebration of your achievements whilst at AUB and most graduands and their guests like to dress smartly for the occasion.

Graduating students will be required to wear gowns, which should be pre-hired from Ede and Ravenscroft. Without a gown you will not be permitted to cross the stage.

Helpful tips:

  • The theatre is likely to be hot so we recommend lighter clothing for graduands and guests (jackets are not required).
  • You will need to navigate stairs up to and down from the stage. We therefore recommend a sensible heel height.
  • Wearing a shirt/blouse with a button will allow the hood of the gown to be securely fastened and stay in place. Carrying safety pins can also be useful.
  • You will be wearing a hat so please ensure any hairstyles, particularly ‘up-do’s’, will allow the hat to be positioned on your head – hair grips are advisable to secure it in place.

Personal belongings cannot be taken onto stage. We recommend leaving these items with your guests or alternatively using the cloakroom that is provided as is possible you will not return to the same seat once you cross the stage.

Where do I hire my gown?

All students attending graduation must hire a gown in advance of the graduation ceremonies.

Ede and Ravenscroft are the suppliers of AUB graduation gowns and bookings should be made directly with them via their website or by calling 01223 861 854 (bookings via phone incur a £5.00 supplementary charge).

Prices can be found on their website.

Booking opens on 3 April and closes 2 June 2017.

Please note, bookings via phone incur a £5.00 supplementary charge.

Ede and Ravenscroft will require your height and head measurements for the booking.

You will be sent an email confirming your gown hire that includes your gown reference number.

You will need to print out and present this email to the Ede and Ravenscroft staff at the ceremony venue in order to collect your gown on the day of your graduation.

Which gown do I order?

The Ede and Ravenscroft website will ask you to confirm which award you are going to receive – there will be a choice of BA or MA, depending upon your course.

The hood colours for AUB are deep purple and lime green and the hood will be included with your gown hire order.

If I can’t go to the ceremony can I get a refund on my gown?

It is possible to cancel your booking a minimum of 7 working days prior to the ceremony and receive a refund.

You will need to contact Ede and Ravenscroft directly in order to do this.  Please note that a small administration fee may apply depending on when the order was made.

Can I buy photographs on the day?

Yes, commemorative photo packages are available and can be booked in advance via the Ede and Ravenscroft website or alternatively you can purchase these on the day.

Photography will be taken after the ceremony in Pavilion Dance South West located on the side of the Pavilion.

Please note that pre-booked packages may be subject to a preferential rate than on the day purchases.

Graduation Day

Where do I collect my gown?

Gown collection will be from the Ballroom at the Bournemouth Pavilion.

We recommend that you arrive 90 minutes prior to the start of your ceremony.

Is there parking available at the Pavilion?

There is no parking at the Bournemouth Pavilion however there are several local car parks close to the venue. Please download the parking map for further details.

Bournemouth in summer is extremely busy with tourists and parking can be limited. We advise leaving plenty of time prior to the ceremony in order to park your vehicle.

You can take a look at our map of car parking in Bournemouth for more guidance.

When should I arrive?

We suggest you arrive at least 90 minutes before your ceremony to allow time for gowning.

Please allow time for traffic and parking as Bournemouth in the summer months is busy with locals and tourists.

Do I need to bring ID?

No, unless you are collecting your guest ticket pack on the day from the collection point. If you are, photo ID will be required.

Please note, only you can pick up your ticket pack – family members or friends are not permitted to do this on your behalf.

What happens if I arrive late?

Late arrivals cannot be guaranteed admittance into the theatre once proceedings have commenced.

It is possible that you may not be able to cross the stage to ‘receive’ your degree.

Please ensure you allow plenty of time for both you and your guests to arrive at the venue prior to the start of the ceremony.

How long does the ceremony last?

Approximately one hour, timings per ceremony can vary slightly.

Where will my guests and I be seated?

Graduands and their guests will not be seated together.

You will be seated in a reserved section of the stalls and your guests will be seated between the remaining stall space and the balcony.

Please note: guests do not have reserved seating and all guests will be shown to available seats by ushers on their arrival into the theatre.

If your guests wish to sit with other guests please ensure you enter the theatre together to increase the possibility of locating seats close by.

Can I buy extra tickets?

We expect each ceremony to be at full capacity as most students tend to take their full allocation of guest tickets.

In the rare occasion that we may have spare capacity, further tickets will be made available and an email will be sent to all students.

They will be sold on a first come first served basis and can be purchased via the registration task.

In the meantime, please do not contact us to ask for additional tickets as we will need to refuse your request.

What happens during the ceremony?

On arrival at the Pavilion, you will head to the Ballroom to be gowned – family/friends cannot accompany you into the gowning room. Please say your goodbyes at this point as this will be the last time you see them until the ceremony has ended.

The theatre will open 30 minutes prior to the start of the ceremony and all guests will be able to take their seats.

Student ushers will meet you in the Ballroom, call out each course and assemble graduands into alphabetical order. They will hand you your name card and escort you into the theatre to take your seats.

Once in your seat, student ushers will direct you from your seat to the stage. Please ensure you have your name card ready to present to the Dean when taking the stage.

Graduands are presented individually by name (alphabetically) within their course.

Once the Dean announces your name, walk to the centre of the stage and shake hands with the Dignatory. Continue to cross the stage to the far side to receive your commemorative scroll and then exit via the stage steps.

You will then be ushered back to your seat. This may be a different seat to the one you previously occupied.

Will my classification be read out when crossing the stage?

No, only your name will be read out. Classification will be printed in the official programme.

What name will be read out when crossing the stage?

After gowning, student ushers will get you into courses and line you up alphabetically.

You will be provided with a name card that has your first name and surname as per your student record (and a pronunciation if this has been provided).

This will be read out by your Dean as you cross the stage.

If you have officially changed your name we require confirmation of the Deedpoll certificate in order to make any changes.

What happens after the ceremony?

Once the ceremony has concluded, all graduates and guests will be directed out of the Theatre and to the Waterfront Marquee where the Champagne Reception is being held.  The reception lasts 1 hour and a live band will be performing, during this time or once the reception has ended you also have the opportunity to:

After the ceremony, you can have your official photos taken by Ede and Ravenscroft, located in Pavilion Dance South West.

You can also purchase your official AUB Graduation memorabilia such as AUB Graduation Hoodies from the Campus Clothing stand.
