TheGallery’s Off-Site Arts Programme

Westbeach, Pier Approach, Bournemouth

TheGallery’s Arts Off – Site Arts Programme in association WestBeach, showcasing the work of staff, students and graduates from Arts University Bournemouth.

TheGallery is delighted to work with WestBeach to feature the work of Taylor Philips, Foundation Studies Alumni, 2016.

See with your Mind, Not what you See is a large scale, surreal digital photo-manipulation revealing the hidden cognitive worlds of the British people using research from historical and contemporary tabloid news stories. Every piece of the image has been deliberately placed to encourage ambiguity and different interpretations.

The piece is made up of three different landscape segments, each created from hundreds of photographs using advance photo manipulation techniques.

Meet the Artist: Taylor Philips

Taylor Philips completed the Foundation Studies course at Arts University Bournemouth in 2016, he has since gone on to study the BA (Hons) Photography at the university.

Taylor is interested by the idea of being able to permanently a freeze a moment in time.  Even from a young age, he was interested in photography and inspired to photograph things that can’t be seen rather than exact representations of the world.

Using digital manipulation, Taylor explores photography as a way to represent hidden thoughts and feelings. Within each piece he aims to create intrigue and a range of possible subjective meanings for the viewer by manipulating every element. Taylor’s inspirations include surrealism, cognitive psychology, sociology and politics.
