Celebrating the tenth year anniversary of the project, the Bournemouth Lower Gardens Exhibition returns from Saturday 28th April – Monday 7th May 2012. Second year students from the Fine Art course at The Arts University Bournemouth will be turning Bournemouth’s Lower Gardens into an exhibiting space as part of a live project for students to respond to the Gardens as inspiration, understanding the nature of Site Specific artwork.
‘Benchmark’ provides no disappointment with exciting artworks to be explored including a kinetic sculpture threatening to escape the bandstand, life-size squirrels roaming the park and fully interactive snail trails!
The brief given to the students has been to create a piece of art that responds to the visual and historical qualities of the Lower Gardens, engaging visitors of all ages. Simón Granell, Senior Lecturer at The Arts University Bournemouth encourages the professional development the project affords students involved, “The project offers the opportunity for young artists to respond the visual, historical and geographical qualities of the Gardens, and invite the public to explore contemporary art in a public setting. Year upon year I am impressed by their ingenuity and ability to collaborate with professionals.”
The project is a partnership project between The Arts University Bournemouth, Bournemouth Borough Council’s Arts Development and the Parks and Countryside departments. The exhibition ‘Benchmark’ runs from 27th April – 7th May and features the work of nineteen Fine Art students, and artist/performer and University graduate Emma Purchase.
Andrew Brown, Parks Coastal Area Officer says ‘“I am really excited that the art students will once again be showing off their artistic skills in the setting of the award winning Lower Gardens. Having been part of the selection process I am really looking forward to seeing the students proposed art work come to life within Bournemouth’s most popular park.”
On the Celebratory Opening Evening on Friday 27th April 2012 between 6.00pm – 8.00pm one of the students will be awarded the ‘Gardeners Choice Award’ chosen by gardeners working for the park. Come down and explore this Eden of artworks and enjoy this leafy gallery!
