"This course has convinced me even more how much I love animation and want to keep going with it."
“I came across AUB’s summer courses at a London UCAS event last year and was really interested in the Animation summer course. It sounds corny but ever since I was little, cartoons have fascinated me, not just watching them but understanding how they are put together. I have been thinking about my career a lot recently and I know I really want to go after something that I actually enjoy, otherwise, what’s the point?
“I had no real expectations of the course before I started, I just hoped I would enjoy it and improve my animation skills. It has been such a fun course. I have loved working in teams on the animated films. Using some of the equipment has been brilliant.
The stop motion workshops were my favourite, and I also really enjoyed pixilation and using the graphics tablets. This course has convinced me even more how much I love animation and want to keep going with it – but I think patience and commitment are two really key parts of begin ‘good’ at animation. I spent 2 days working on 1 ½ seconds of an animation – but when you see the final product you feel like a proud parent!”
"I loved the hands-on approach to the fashion course."by Yiming
Fashion Design and Portfolio Preparation
“I enjoyed both of my courses but I think the Fashion Design course was my favourite, as I really want to be a clothes designer.
I have been used to working by myself for a long time so I was a little nervous about being in a group of people, but it was very helpful to share ideas and learn from other students. There were some challenging areas of the course. I have been improving my English, so I have been studying hard to keep up with information about the fashion industry.
My careers advisor at my university recommended doing a summer course here and it was definitely the right decision. I loved the hands-on approach to the fashion course. It was nearly all practical, which was a good contrast to the Portfolio Preparation course, which has a bit more digital work on it. Its been my first time in Bournemouth and I really love it – its very safe, lots to do and the beaches are lovely. I am staying on at AUB now to join the BA Fashion department as a Study Abroad student for a term. I am so excited!”
"I have completely fallen for film now and I love being in Bournemouth. I honestly don’t want to leave!”by Joshua
“I found the course online and loved the look of it . I spoke to an AUB graduate who spoke so positively about AUB that it convinced me to come here for the summer course. I was previously a student at international school in China studying business administration but I have a personal interest in film making and also felt there were lots of useful learning tools from the course that would crossover into business that would be useful, such as critique and analysis , working in a team etc. Of course, now that I have done this film making summer course I have really been inspired, and am now applying to do BA Film here at AUB!
“I loved the scriptwriting and directing workshops the best. Being behind the camera is definitely the bit for me. I think the biggest thing I learnt was just understanding all the roles that go into making a film, I have real appreciation now for various aspects such as sound and cinematography. This course has helped me to branch out rather than letting me box myself in too much. I have completely fallen for Film. I love AUB and being in Bournemouth. I honestly don’t want to leave!”
"“I have discovered an absolute love and fascination with cinematography”by Jonathon
“I came to one of the AUB Open Days to hear about the full time Film course and heard about the summer course through the film tutors. I really felt I needed lots of practical experience, to improve my technical skills, and I also wanted a bit of an insight into the full time BA Film course – so the summer course was a good starting point for me.
“I have recently studied Film Making for over a year at a college in the UK but despite that, 90% of the stuff taught to me on the AUB summer course was totally new – and the approach to how we were taught was just fantastic. I got a real insight into the different roles and processes of filmmaking, rather than learning about them in isolation. I also loved the professional insight from the tutors on the course who have acted in, produced or directed all sorts of films and tv parts. Having people teaching on the course who have worked directly in the film industry is so important I think. The course is tiring but you have to have a real passion and commitment to working in the film industry anyway so it’s a good way to show you the hard work that goes into film making!
“Before coming here I thought I knew what I wanted – to be a film director – but I have discovered so many other roles in the film making process that resonate with me, it has completely changed my direction. I have discovered an absolute love and fascination with cinematography, so I am pursuing camera work and the visual side of film making, its what I love.”
"I love that we have been able to theme our projects on things we love that are really personal to each individual."by Leo
“I heard about AUB through my art teacher who recommended I look at the summer courses before applying for a BA. The Portfolio Preparation course has been amazing. I am doing the Foundation year at AUB in September 2017 and then hoping to progress on to the BA (Hons) Graphic Design, so I thought it would be useful for me to get my portfolio started and develop my creative ideas before starting the Foundation year.
“My favourite part of the course has been designing magazine covers and using music videos as part of our inspiration – I love that we have been able to theme our projects on things we love in our lives like music or travel that are really personal to each individual.”
"The staff are so cool – they are the ones that have made the course so good – totally inspiring and really encouraged me."by Anna
Fashion Marketing & Communication
“I heard about this summer course through my sister’s school, as quite a lot of students there have applied to AUB for a place on a BA course.
“I didn’t know what to expect and it has been totally amazing – I’ve learnt loads and have a much more varied portfolio than I thought I would have produced – without this course I don’t think I would have any portfolio at all.
“The staff are so cool, they are the ones that have made the course so good, totally inspiring and really encouraged me. For me the best part was the media elements of the course. I loved using some of the technology like the 3D laser cutting which was awesome. I have never had a chance to try out this sort of thing and it totally opened up my mind to what you can do with fashion and technology nowadays.
“I got lots of technical advice and would definitely say my drawing has improved as I have been working a lot on my sketchbooks. I stayed in the AUB Halls which were great – really modern and it was fun to hang out with people from the other courses too. I have had an interview for BA (Hons) Fashion whilst being here for my summer course, and am really pleased to say I have now been accepted to start in September 2017. I cannot believe it and am so excited.
“My advice to future summer students? Don’t be worried about making friends, be ready to listen to your tutors and open your mind!”
"The course is better than I thought…it has been really in-depth”by Simeon
“I did the Graphic Design summer course at AUB last year and enjoyed it so much it swayed me to apply for the BA degree in Graphic Design – so I have returned to do Portfolio Preparation summer course so that I have a decent portfolio for my university application and can build upon all the stuff I learnt on the first summer course.
“The course is better than I thought – I thought we would just touch upon some aspects of art and design but it has been really in-depth, especially looking at how other subjects tie into creative arts such as psychology, maths and philosophy. I think my favourite aspects were typography and logo design.”
"Everyone’s been really friendly and wanting to share ideas to make all our work better."by Sophie
“The freedom we had on this course was amazing, it really felt like we were let loose in the studio. Working with all the equipment that you would have in a professional make-up studio has really helped me understand the process.
“The course wasn’t quite what I imagined – it has been much better! I imagined there would be quite a lot of ‘sitting down time’ where we’d just be listening to lectures or tutorials – quite the opposite. I would say that 95% of this course has been practical and I am so glad! It has given me so much confidence and I have experimented with loads of different styles and techniques.
“My favourite parts were the workshops on special effects/zombie style makeup and prosthetics – plus the photo shoots for these were really funny.
“Its also been brilliant getting so many good tips and advice from the lecturers and make-up staff – they are so knowledgeable and helpful. I have visited a few universities in London before and felt they had a very cold and clinical approach – buts its not like that at AUB. Everyone’s been really friendly and wanting to share ideas to make all our work better.
I can’t believe the three weeks have gone so quickly – I’m really pleased with what I achieved on the course – my practical makeup skills have definitely improved but also I understand more about the design side of creative make-up and what’s excepted of you at degree level and in the industry. I have had so much fun – and now I have my heart set on joining AUB’s BA Make-Up degree course, so hopefully I will be back next year as a full time student!”
"Best. Summer. Ever."
“Best. Summer. Ever.
It sounds like a cliché but the only thing I didn’t like was that the course finished too quickly! I could happily spend all my time here – there’s so much to learn – plus all the equipment you have access to is awesome.
I can’t believe all that I have achieved in 3 weeks – I have so many photos for my portfolio and am really pleased with the work I have done, particularly the studio shoots as I’ve always found that quite difficult.
I haven’t decided what I want to do yet – I’m still thinking about going to university but I want to do a year’s travel photography first – something I would never have had the confidence to do if I hadn’t done this course first.”
"I’ve already put in an application for AUB’s Fashion degree – this is definitely the place I want to study."
Fashion Marketing and Communication
“I was a little nervous before coming to the university this summer – I wasn’t sure what it would be like and whether I would fit in. I realise now I was worrying over nothing. Being able to work and collaborate with brilliant minded people from all over the world has been a fantastic experience. I’ve made loads of friends and its also shown me how much you can learn from other people.
I love that as a group we all have come up with completely different ideas based on the same project. Before starting the course I thought I wanted to study Fashion Design, but I love the creative writing side and looking at the industry – so I think something in editorial or fashion writing is what I want to do eventually. I’ve already put in an application for AUB’s Fashion degree – this is definitely the place I want to study.”
"I love that its made me think about things such as sustainability and how people use spaces in different ways."
“This might sound stupid but doing the Architecture course has made me realise the subject is more than just buildings and plans. I love that its made me think about things such as sustainability and how people use spaces in different ways. Every day on the course was different; I’ve learned so many things that I didn’t know even existed.
I really enjoyed the model making as it was fun to be able to create the designs you had on paper. I also enjoyed the group discussions about our work and also the presentation at the end of our projects – it made us consider our work from a different angle, which I suppose it what creative thinking is all about.”
"I can definitely say that I now feel prepared and confident to start a career in the arts."
“Having spent 3 weeks in an atmosphere of free thinking and creativity, it has really pushed me to express myself and increased my confidence in my artistic abilities. I wasn’t sure if my costume skills would be good enough, but the tutors have been so helpful. My making skills have improved about 1000% and I understand the whole creative process a lot better, about how to go from a design or idea and develop that through to your finished piece.
The study trips to London and Bath were real highlights too – it was great to explore British cities and learn more about art and culture in the UK.
I can definitely say that I now feel prepared and confident to start a career in the arts.”
"I have learnt so much in 3 weeks – and having all of the make-up looks recorded in the photoshoot was brilliant."
“Before starting my course, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do make-up as a career choice or leave it as a hobby, but I enjoyed the special effect make-up so much I know that I definitely want to pursue that as a career.
I have learnt so much in 3 weeks – and having all of the make-up looks recorded in the photoshoot was brilliant.
I’d recommend coming to AUB during the summer to anyone who wants to get into a creative subject – its such a friendly atmosphere that we honestly felt like we’d been studying together for ages. “
"What can I say about my AUB experience? Unforgettable. My teachers, my group – all of them were amazing."
“What can I say about my AUB experience? Unforgettable. My teachers, my group – all of them were amazing.
I took the Portfolio Preparation summer course – it was really interesting and valuable for me as it was exactly the area I needed to work on before applying to university. I loved being able to explore lots of different creative arts subjects, and my teachers were so supportive.
The course gave me the inspiration to work harder and go for what I want – I know what that is now; to study my Foundation at AUB and become a better artist.”
