About this course

This exciting workshop will teach you how to ‘see’ and ‘experience’ the world around you in a unique way, and how to capture these fleeting moments. This will include learning techniques to respond to different subjects, including landscapes, botanical, perspective, movement, the human form and much more.

Although you'll be learning new skills, this workshop is also about having a relaxed week where ‘learning by doing’ is encouraged. Your tutor will take a less formal approach to teaching and where possible will adapt their sessions to meet your needs. This summer workshop encourages a supportive, inclusive, and positive creative experience.

This course will start with the foundations of drawing and mark making using a variety of mediums, including pen, pencil, and charcoal. Following this, you'll move on to the beautiful medium of watercolour, which will involve learning basic techniques and colour theory.

Throughout the week the sessions will take place both on and off campus to give you the opportunity to experience several beautiful and inspiring locations in Dorset. As a group, you'll go out to sketch and paint at selected locations, including one museum and one venue to practice plein air techniques. This will give you the chance to explore the local area and also experience a different approach to creating art.

When on campus, you'll take advantage of AUB's outstanding facilities and award-winning architecture. You'll explore fascinating objects in the university’s very own nationally recognised Museum of Design in Plastics (MoDiP), draw and paint the face and human figure (dressed model) in the unique CRAB drawing studio, and sketch the modern architecture and sculptures.

In addition to course teaching hours, you'll be able to access our maker workshops in the early evenings to continue working on your creative pieces, if you wish.

  • Observational drawing and mark making techniques, including form, tone, perspective, texture and negative space
  • How to experiment and use a range of different mediums, including pen, pencil and charcoal
  • Introduction to colour theory and basic watercolour techniques
  • Capturing the human form from life
  • Portraiture
  • How to tackle the depiction of a range of subjects, including landscapes, botanicals, and architecture
  • Plein air sketching/painting on location
  • Depicting movement
  • Explore famous artist’s sketchbooks and styles through a series of demonstrations

All students with 100% course attendance will be issued with an official AUB Summer Course certificate of attendance. You'll receive this at the end of your course.

On your last day there'll be an exhibition of the work created on the course; celebrate your achievements and those of your fellow artists.

The Summer Courses team invite you to attend an optional farewell meal at a local restaurant. A perfect conclusion to your creative week where new friendships and skills shall be celebrated.

After this course you could:

  • Use your new skills to further your career or change direction
  • Continue to develop your skills at home as a hobby
  • Develop a robust portfolio of personal work to contribute to further study or employment
